Most people don't think about their fireplace until they actually want to use it. Then they flip the switch and something's off - weak flame, weird smell, cloudy glass. That's usually when we get the call. The good news is that a proper diagnostic and maintenance visit can catch those issues early, before they turn into a real headache.
This Heat & Glo in Woodburn is a good example of what a full tune-up looks like in practice. We pulled the glass panel completely off the unit so we could get eyes on the interior components - burner, logs, ignition wiring, all of it. That's the only way to actually know what's going on inside. A quick visual inspection with the panel on doesn't cut it.
The glass itself gets a dedicated cleaning with fireplace-specific glass cleaning cream. Gas fireplaces build up a white haze on the inside of the glass over time - it's a byproduct of combustion and it doesn't just wipe off with a regular cleaner. Using the right product matters here. We protect the surrounding area and work the glass until it's clear again.
Beyond the glass, we're also checking that the unit fires correctly, that the flame pattern looks right, and that everything is seated and connected the way it should be. Heat & Glo units are well-built, but like any gas appliance, they need attention to keep running safely and efficiently. Skipping maintenance for a few seasons is where small issues quietly become bigger ones.
Fall is honestly the right time to get this done. You want to know your fireplace is ready before you actually need it on a cold night - not after.
