Airflow problems in a zoned system can be tricky to chase down. One zone getting heat or cool air while another gets nothing - or barely anything - usually points to a control issue somewhere in the ductwork. That's exactly what we were dealing with here in Newberg.

The culprit turned out to be a faulty damper motor on a Honeywell 2-zone system. The damper motor is what physically opens and closes the damper inside the duct, directing airflow to the right zone at the right time. When it fails, the system keeps running but the air isn't going where it needs to go. The homeowner was getting inconsistent comfort and couldn't figure out why - now they know.

We accessed the damper up in the ductwork, pulled the bad motor, and swapped in a new Honeywell Home unit. Once it was wired back in and confirmed open and closed positions were responding correctly, airflow was back to normal across both zones. The dual Carrier air handlers inside and the two condensing units outside were otherwise in solid shape - just needed that one component sorted out.

Since we were already on-site, we knocked out regular HVAC maintenance at the same time. That means checking refrigerant levels, inspecting electrical connections, cleaning what needed to be cleaned, and making sure both systems were dialed in heading into the warmer months. It's the kind of thing that catches small issues before they turn into bigger ones.

A 2-zone system is only as good as its ability to actually direct airflow. When one piece of that puzzle breaks down, the whole system underperforms. Getting the right diagnosis fast is what makes the difference between a quick repair and an expensive replacement down the road.
