We got called out to take a look at a Lennox furnace and Carrier A/C setup at a home in Salem. The homeowner had a feeling something wasn't quite right - and they were correct to trust that instinct. Sometimes the system still runs, but that doesn't mean everything is fine under the hood.
When we opened things up on the furnace, we found rust that had already started working its way into internal components. That kind of corrosion doesn't develop overnight, and it rarely stops on its own. Left alone, rust like this can compromise the heat exchanger or other critical parts - and that's when a manageable repair turns into a much more expensive situation.
That's the thing about HVAC systems. They can keep limping along for a while before something finally gives out. But catching the deterioration early - before a component fails completely - is almost always the better outcome. Fewer parts, less labor, no emergency call in the middle of a cold snap.
On the A/C side, the Carrier condenser outside looked intact and was holding up reasonably well. Our focus was making sure we had a clear picture of where each system stood, so the homeowner could make informed decisions - not rushed ones.
If your furnace or A/C is showing any signs that something's off - unusual sounds, inconsistent performance, or you just haven't had it looked at in a while - it's worth getting eyes on it before a small issue turns into a costly repair.
